Question
Hi, I am a 31 year old female, who recently started experiencing pain in my left hand, that would radiate to my wrist. Just recently it started radiating to my elbow and shoulder with swelling around the wrist area. The pain is at time unbearable. Any suggestions on what I can do to ease the pain and what the next steps are that I should take.

I thank you in advance!

Answer
I have multiple questions that should be answered for a specific diagnosis.  If your condition represents a cervical radiculopathy treatment can often take quite a few months.  Radiculopathy is a condition where the nerves coming from the spine become inflamed or compressed.  There are many causes including disc herniation, stenosis, spurs, metabolic disorders or infection.  I would suggest a high field MRI of the cervical spine for a start to see if your neck is the source of the problem.  If you do not have a doctor that will order an MRI, please find one.  Some MRI centers have a very low cash price, if your insurance is a limited policy.  Treatment may have to proceed after a diagnosis is determined.  Treatment may include Class IV laser therapy, decompression traction, and gentle manipulation.  You can use ice at home and topical analgesics such as Biofreeze.  I have found high power laser therapy to be particularly helpful for many cases of radiculopathy.

Your problem may also be complex.  Should your problem also include other conditions, such as diabetes or concurrent carpal tunnel syndrome, you may need evaluation for that as well.  Please send another follow-up response if you have more questions or have an MRI report.

All the best,
Dr. True
