QuestionMy Question..
What is the cure for slipped disc and can MRI confirm traction will not suffice as a method of cure and if so then what?
AnswerDear Prakash,
MRI cannot confirm that any form of treatment will or will not be successful in treatment. There are several options for the treatment of discopathy with radiculopathy. The most important thing to remember is that NOTHING is going to make you grow a new disc. Damaged discs simply continue to degrade and degenerate, regardless of treatment. The most important thing is to find methods to help you manage the condition.
My rule is to start with the least invasive and move towards the most invasive if the first treatments are not beneficial.
1) manipulation and other forms of physical therapy, massage
2) Traction, decompression traction
3) Acupuncture
4) Oral medications... short term only.
5) Trigger point injections
6) Epidural injections
7) Facet joint injections/ radiofrequency neuroablation
8) Disc surgery, laminectomy, etc.
Long term outcomes for those that have conservative care verses surgical care is about the same... so why do surgery unless everything else fails completely?
I hope that this gives you some ideas. Good luck with your disc and neuropathy issue.
