QuestionHI. I strained my neck weightlifting about 26 years ago. I was doing a hack squat, and foolishly threw my head back and tried to complete the lift. I experienced searing pulsating pain up my neck. I now experience chronic head aches, muscle spasms in my neck whenever I strain in any way. (Openning a jar, lifting something even moderately heavy, screwing in a screw). Pain radiates into my face jaw area. Headaches last several days, gradually diminishing. Now even tight pants on the waist cause a similar reaction. I am very limited in what I can do.
It was investigated medically to no avail.
Any ideas or advise?
I would be very thankful
Dwight
AnswerHi, Dwight,
Years ago, I had as a client an Olympic power lifter with a similar problem: neck spasms and headaches. His pain cleared up in a few sessions.
The muscles of your neck and spine are musclebound, probably from your way of training, with spasms triggered by the incident you described.
I'm recommending some articles for you, which also specify a remedy for your condition.
See the articles on headaches, recovery from injuries, and weight training at somatics.com/page4.htm.
You'll have to retrain your control of the involved muscles to the degree of being able to relax them. Then, the headaches and muscle pain will end.
If you want a recommendation for a self-help program, I'll provide one; otherwise, get with a somatics practitioner (click PRACTITIONERS on the blue navigation bar at somatics.com).
