Question
About one year ago I devoloped severe pain in my lower back and hips. After a year of suffering and trying different medicines the doctor finally sent me for an MRI as well as some other test. I was diagnosed with DDD in my lower back and sciatica in my hips. I am a 24 year old once gym finatic and passionate weight lifter. I don't know the best way to get back in training without causing pain to injury or doing the wrong thing to make my pain flare up now that it is under control.  Please help me to know what physical activity best for my situation. ex. swimming, weight training, jogging, biking, eliptical?

Thanks for writing!

The best physical exercise for you is swimming or eliptical. Biking would be next. Jogging and weight training are a problem.

DDD means that the cushions between your back bones in your lower back are dried up and crumbling. There is no doubt but that you would benefit from more water intake.

There is a great book out there called "dealing with joint and back pain----" by Dr. Batmanhelidj  (spelling?). It contains specific exercises which would cure your back if done enough.

Get the book by Dr. Batman and follow the directions.

Finally, this type of problem is almost always associated with digestive problems. If you are on one of the popular antacids, it will never get well and will get worse. Nutrtiional supplements are available that will support the digestion. Apple Cider Vinegar is a good place to start.

It is also advisable to get chiropractic adjustments to balance the stress on the low back and to take the stress off and strengthen the low back. A good chiropractor can help you with this. Go to www.sorsi.com, www.icak.com and www.soto-usa.com and look for a good chiropractor near you.
