Bulging disc and weight training

Question
Dear Dr. Starbuck,
I am a 28 year old male. I have minimal bulging in L4-5 disc. At college, I did some weight training but not at the level of full-fledged body building. I made bicep curls etc. I wanna ask whether it is possible for me to do bicep curls with bulging disc or not? If not, what kind of sports can you recommend to sustain the strength of the muscles without injring the discs further. Can swimming be a good alternative?
Best Reagrds,
Kevin

Answer
Swimming is a good alternative, there is very little stress on joints and discs.  But my strongest suggestion is to get the bulging disc fixed as soon as possible before before it becomes a herniation that causes more problems.  Since it is minor, I strongly suggest seeing a chiropractor.  We treat discs with non-surgical means, and is very effective for your condition.  If you don't see a chiropractor and are interested, go to www.sorsi.com to find a doctor near you.  I am a member of this group and would trust any of them with my own family.  I discourage weight training at this point, at least until you have stabilized the bulging disc.  I suggest the swimming, walking, occasional jogging (too much jarring), exercise ball and thera-band work.  If you are in Minnesota near the Twin Cities or if you have any other questions or concerns, please email me, I would be glad to help further.
