Question
Hello. I have been dealing with this for a long time and dont understand my recent MRI results.  I am in lots of pain.  Please can you explain in everyday language what it means.  Its says:
C2-3 Normal
C3-4 Slightly asymmetirc left uncovertebral spurring extends beyond the corner of the endplate by 1-2 mm.
C4-5 Spondylitic disease of significance is not identified
C5-6 No spondylitic disease of significance
C6-7 There is suggestion of a far left lateral/foraminal annular tear associated with approximately 2 mm protrusion. This results in mild to moderate left foraminal stenosis.  The canal is patent as is the right foramen.
Impression:  Probable annular fissure and small protrustioninto the left foramen at c6-7 resulting in mild to moderal left foraminal stenosis

Does this mean that I need surgery?  I numb alot in my left arm and middle and forefinger.  Lots of pain in my shoulder.  Thank you soooo much in advance.

Answer
I don't believe you need surgery, yet.  I and many of my colleagues treat these symptoms everyday.  It would be easier to describe to you in person the MRI, but I will take a shot.

Uncovertebral spurring means there is a bone spur in a specific joint in that area of the bone in your neck, sounds like it might be starting to touch the disc which could cause some troubles in the future.
At C6-7, the "annular tear and protrusion" mean that the disc has slightly ruptured and is protruding into or onto the nerve that exits out of the foramen, which is a hole in the vertebrae where nerves exit.  This could be the culprit causing your "numbness" in you hand.
My strongest suggestion is to seek a chiropractic consultation, take your MRI so they can discuss it with you.  If you don't see a chiropractor, go to www.sorsi.com to locate a doctor near you.  I am a member of this organization, and each and every one of these doctors are excellent.  I am located in St. Paul, Minnesota and would be more than happy to see you.  If you have any other question or concerns or need help locating a doctor, please email me.
