QuestionMy friend was involved in a MVA on January,21,2007,at that time she was diagnosed with a C2 fracture. She had her neck immobilized with a collar, she was told the neck fracture would heal on its own.She has now been told by two Drs. to have surgery because the scar tissue is too built up for it to mend on its own and a third says he can see some healing. She has no idea what to do.
AnswerBecause I am not a neurosurgeon and I have no idea what the fracture looks like or its actual location in relation to the spinal cord, I can't really give a good judgement on what would be the best course of action. However, while I admit that all surgery has risks, I can also say that it would probably be best to follow the advice of 2 out of 3 doctors instead of 1 out of 3 doctors.
I would recommend that you ask the doctors about any potential complications such as paralysis if the fracture goes untreated. That information will make a great difference in what choices are made.
Thank you for your question, Sharon. I hope that my answer was helpful.
