Question
Hi. I have a cyst in my neck.  I would like to have it removed.  It has been there for 15 years and I have been getting headaches...could that be part of it?  I noticed that I couldn't look up as easily as I use.  Is it an relatively safe procedure?

Answer
Dear Eleanor,

A cyst can be a part of the headache problem, but doesn't necessarily have to be contributory.  It really depends on where the cyst is located, the size, and what anatomical structures in the neck are being affected. Bottom line is that you should have it removed, and after the tissue is healed is a more appropriate time to to have an examination to focus on the source of the headaches.

As far as safety is concerned, cyst removal is considered to be a minor surgery, but is often performed in the regular doctors office under just a local anesthetic.  Safety issues considering your cyst would have to be discussed with your treating physician concerning the specific procedure being utilized, and the affected structures.

I wish I could offer you more information Eleanor, but without the ability to localize the cyst and a functional look at the tissue, it is hard for me to render a more detailed opinion.  Moreover, a medical doctor is more of an expert in this matter than I am, as chiropractors do not perform cyst excision. you may want to pose this question to one of them on the allexperts site. Good luck.

Respectfully,
Dr. J. Shawn Leatherman
