QuestionHello, I'm 31 and have had back problems since I was 18, the latest MRI showed that I have mild DDD and 2 herniated discs with a annular tear in one of them L4, L5, S1..I go to Chiropractor, I have numbness and discoloration on both legs from the hip to the knees. I recently re-injured mu back 3 weeks ago by simply turning to grab a shirt off my dresser, the pain was very intense, I couldn't sit or get out of bed without help for a week. My question is, with the damage to my back, will Chiropractic care help and or heal my problem, or am I a candidate for a certain type of back surgery. If you can advise or give some sort of a "best option" for me to do, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank You for your time and expertise, Philip Himmelreich
AnswerAlthough I am not a physician or neurosurgeon, I can say that it is virtually impossible to diagnose conditions over the internet. A much better answer can be given by a medical professional who has access to examining you in person, reviewing your entire medical history, and looking at your X-rays and other studies.
Having said that, it is almost always my recommendation to avoid surgery for as long as possible. I have seen too many folks get back surgery and return for additional surgery within a few years. I advise working with an osteopath or chiropractor that will teach you stretching exercises similar to yoga that can help prevent recurrent flare-ups. Traction can also be helpful as can weight loss which is usually an issue in low back cases.
Thank you for your question, Phillip. I hope that my answer was helpful.
