QuestionI have just been for physiotherapy as I had shoulder pain, with severe pins and needles down my arm and into my hand. She has told me that I have a bulging disk due to the way I work (I am an accountant). I am okay moving around doing light housework, but as soon as I sit to work my arm and hand hurt and my head seems to pull forward. I have never taken time off work, but would it help not to be in this position for a period (days or maybe weeks) as I feel it is making it worse, but as I am self-employed I can't write myself a sick note, and don't know what I should be doing. I am just in so much pain as soon as I sit at a desk or drive.
Thanks
AnswerHi, Jackie.
What you are describing are effects of muscular contractions in your neck: the pull forward, the pins and needles (nerve impingement).
The bulging disc is secondary, an effect, not a cause, the result of muscular contractions squeezing vertebrae together.
May I recommend you read the article on whiplash injuries, which has relevant information, at somatics.com/page4b.htm
