QuestionIn 2002 I was injured in a multi car collision. My car was impacted on all sides, totaled. I had immediate head pain, and a cut on my left shoulder.
stand up MRI - of cervical spine was discs 4/5, 5/6 bulging impinging on thecal sac - c 6/7 herniated, and also impinging on thecal sac. (left )
lumbar MRI-dessication of discs
diagnosed with radicular pain, headaches, and arm weakness, emg, ncv all listed nerve damage c 6/7. Loss of cervical curve, new mris' 2005, lay down mri bone spurs, and loss of curve.
mild damage also in the left leg, ( MRI of both knees 2003 listed fluid Joint infusion in both knees)
my symptoms are pretty much the same since trauma;
neck pain
headaches
arm pain, burning at times
pain in the ring finger and the middle finger (both hands
pain in the pinky and thumb )both hands)
trouble holding my head up
pain holding my head up,
pain moving neck side to side
unable to move my head up really at all
If I move my head up I get really bad pain down my arms,
Pain reduces but doesn't go away when I lay down
sometimes when I lay on my back the pain makes my arms burn while I am sleeping.
Sometimes, I choke when eating (when pain is really bad)
Sometimes, I gag in the shower when I tip my head back to rinse my hair
If I peel a potato or use both hand or arms the pain gets bad.
pain in my neck and the balls of the top of my shoulder when I turn my neck to the right.
I have trouble standing and I become disoriented when the neck and head pain is real bad
the headaches always are there dull just below my 2 ears at the base of my head
I get pain in my forarms and my elbows especially the right elbow
when the pain is bad my coat on my back causes me pain.
I just went to a neurosurgeon because I was referred by a gasteroenterolgist, for constipation. I also just started getting numbness in my right second toe, August/ September.
He took a flexion extension MRi and tole me I had a positive hoffman reflex in the right hand but, he could not explain the burning in my arms-based upon the MRI,
My question is: I know I am not crazy; I have had PT, ACCUPUNTURE, SHOTS, DRUGS, AND NOTHING HAS HELPED.
Do you think that perhaps I have pain and headaches because my neck is pushed forward and I have no curve, is that a possible explaination for the recent change in the MRI- or do the changes in my positioning of my neck affect the MRI. I just can't take the pain anymore, it has been 5 years and I really have a life but, a poor quality of life. I am limited, because of my neck, and restricted.
I just went to an open house for my child and I had difficulty walking and really bad pain just walking to see 5 teachers,
If you were me what would you do; who would you seek out; as far as medical personal.
PS When I was examined by a social security doctor in 2004 she told me if you ever get constipation or numbness in the toes you should see a surgeon. I was approved for social security at the age of 42 and deemed disabled.
AnswerDear g,
Most of your symptoms, including change of neck curvature and disc bulges, are consistent with muscular contractions in your neck subsequent to whiplash injuries. These muscular contractions are reflexive actions of the nervous system that have persisted past the healing period for tissue damage.
If I were in your condition, I would be seeking out someone in my profession -- clinical somatic education. The process, a non-surgical approach involving movement training, frees muscular contractions by restoring voluntary control over reflexively held contractions; muscles relax.
Please see the articles at somatics.com/page4b.htm, including the on on headaches and whiplash injuries.
The process I recommend may not clear all of your symptoms, but I would expect it to clear most of them.
