Question
QUESTION: Currently experiencing numerous problems.  First one is a long standing low back problem.  No pain but numbness in both outer thighs from the knee upwards for about 6 inches.  Also a very tender spot on the right outer thigh very close to the level of the knee.  Pain only when pressed  - like the pain you get when you press a bad bruise.

Second problem involves the cervical spine, dull ache in the area between the shoulder blades and sometimes numbness in both the ring and pinky finger and tingling - both hands.

Lying down and raising my head and shoulders - Stretching causes cracking of the upper spine.

I did weight lifting and karate for many years.  I am 48 year of age.

I have seen numerous chiros over the years but the thigh numbness has never disappeared, but lately seems to be getting worse.

Is it worth approaching my doctor to arrange x rays scans etc.  No low back pain only really a dull stiffness but numbenss is beginning to worry me as it seems to be getting worse

ANSWER: Hi James,

You need to find a competent DC, you have a TFL syndrome for the first problem which you can Google for more info and an ulnar neuropathy for the second problem. This requires a cervical MRI and towel traction to fix if it is a disc. It can also be a TOS (Thoracic outlet syndrome), also treated effectively by a competent DC.

A cervical rib can also cause this and is easily identified on plain film x-ray, this unfortunately requires surgery, I doubt it is that since you have probably had neck x-rays done in the past.
Let me know where you live and I will find you one. The low back needs flexion/distraction treatment performed on a specialized and common table found in most Chiropractors offices, you can Google that as well to see how that works. None of your problems sound irreparable and should respond accordingly to proper treatment, if you need more in depth information, I can personally be reached on my cell at 708-466-9994.

Good Luck!

QUESTION: Thanks for your response, I was wondering if the thigh numbness could possibly be due to pressure on the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve getting pinched causing meralgia paresthetica - unusual in both legs I know.

Answer
It is certainly a possibility if you carry a tool belt or are over weight, I don't suspect the later given your history. Only a hands on evaluation will tell. As stated earlier, there are a myriad of possibilities at this point and the best equipped to differentially diagnose the problem is a DC or Orthopedic Surgeon. I recommend you see either as soon as practicable.

Good Luck,

Dr. Tim
