QuestionLast yr. I fell off ladder onto a night stand while cleaning a ceiling fan. I have been seeing chiropractor, who referred me to md doctor, MRI, xray and surgeon. Surgeon immediately wanted to do surgery on my torn rotator cuff right shoulder... I found out that surgery could result in less mobility than what I had without pain...I merely had occassional very sharp spasms that felt like an ice pick stabbing me in area between neck and arm joint.
I have since gone to muscular therapy and this has relieved my spasms... I am able to reach behind my back, over my head, hold my arm straight while doctor applies pressure down on it all of this without pain.
MY QUESTION IS CAN ALL OF THIS BE POSSIBLE WITH A TORN ROTATOR CUFF OR SHOULD I RETURN FOR ANOTHER MRI AND XRAY FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF A MIX UP IN THE RECORDS...
AnswerHi Paul,
Muscle release therapy is usually very effective for rotator cuff problems. The tear in your rotator cuff is probably small and therefore would not require surgery. Small rotator cuff tears usually respond well to conservative (non-surgical) therapy. Your diagnosis is most likely correct but the surgeon should not have immediately suggested surgery without first recommending conservative care.
I hope this helps!
