nerve root compression at c5-c6

Question
over three weeks back I woke up with a stiff neck which over the day gradually  progressed to  a very painful upper arm with the pain sometimes going rt upto the forarm. Since then after certain visits to physicians finally a neurologist asked for a cervical MRI Scan . This is what the MRI Radiologist's report tell me

"MR scan reveals dessication of C5-C6 disc appearing hypointense in T2 weighted image. There is also soft right posterior paracentral portrusion of the disc causing thecal compression, right neural foraminal narrowing as well as right C6 nerve root compression but no central canal stenosis or cord compression."

He then goes on to detail other features all of  which he pronounces to be normal.

I am  basically into programming and I admit my  desk-chair aspects were not optimum but never got around to remedying them . I am also into recreational weight training (moderately heavy free squats i.e about 50% more than my body weight  ).
my neurologist suggests conservative treatment to see if the pain goes away . But my point is can I get back to  an active lifestyle ? well maybe no more squats for me  but running , swimming ,occasional soccer etc.
Would be grateful for your take on this . BTW I am  42 years old.
