Question
whats the best way to treat a persistent right sided sciatica L5 S1 distribution. they said that I could possibly need surgery for this. I am off work at the moment for the next six week due to the pain that I get from this daily. Its all of a sudden just came on. I can barely get out of bed in the mornings and the pain is unbearable some days even with painkillers.

Surgery is appropriate only when a disc is ruptured.  Otherwise, it's "ill advised".

Most sciatica results from muscular contractions of the lumbar spinal musculature and waist muscles on one side -- in your case, the right side -- which compresses the sciatic nerve roots where they exit the spinal column.  Symptoms abate immediately upon relaxation of those muscles into their normal resting tone.

I've done a write-up on the condition.

If you can find a Hanna somatic educator within practical distance, that's the best/fastest way out.  Immediate improvement in one session and complete relief, probably, in three.

see: http://hannasomatics.com and click PRACTITIONERS for the list.

Lacking a practitioner, I can recommend a self-relief somatic exercise program, if you ask.  Please read the write-up, first.

practical action:  visit and get the exercise video from this page:  http://somatics.com/back_pain.htm
