Answer
Hi, Lucy,

The major finding is disc herniations.

Disc herniations (bulges) commonly come from muscular contractions in the neck; in your case, the whiplash injury from your collision may have caused herniations along with the disc (annular) tear -- and the neck muscle contractions. Muscular contractions, themselves, hurt; along with neck muscle contractions, it sounds like other muscles down your spine and upper back have contracted.

First, read my entry on whiplash injuries.  |  http://somatics.com/whiplash.htm
Next, read my entry on recovery from injuries to understand why neck muscles contract after injury.  |  http://somatics.com/recovery_from_injury.htm  |  This entry applies whether or not you have surgery.

I recommend you start with exercises to relax your neck to take pressure off of the discs. Somatic education exercises do that. They will make you more comfortable.

Send for the regimen of exercises provided here:  | http://lawrencegoldsomatics.blogspot.com/2014/06/regimen-for-sacro-iliac-iliosac | I'm directing you there because the regimen contains many exercises that can free neck musculature -- but start with the first one, only, for a number of days until you can feel the difference. Then, proceed GENTLY, according to the instructions given.

Once you're familiar with the first exercise, learn what's on this page
| http://lawrencegoldsomatics.blogspot.com/2014/08/the-tongue-mudra-transformation | and add it to the first exercise of the regimen (Gentle Spine Waves).

If, after you have some experience, you want personal coaching, see this page.
