Question
I recently went to my dr. because of lower back pain.He said I may have D.J.D.,everything I've looked up on it says nothing about the back. All it refers to is the knee, fingers and hips.Is there any surgery that can be done?I will be having an x-ray and blood work done,by the way I am 45 yrs old.

Answer
Jim,

Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD) is another name for Osteoarthritis. It is very common to have this conditon in the spinal column. You are a little young for osteoarthritis of the lower spine (lumbar arthritis). Unfortunately arthritis is no respecter of persons. This is not an area you want surgery unless it is necessary.

Treatment is for DJD of the lumbar area is usually a combination of anti-inflammatories and physical therapy.
Treatment is usually determined after the X-rays and other diagnostic procedures determine the seriousness of the arthritis.

I wish you well.
