QuestionI was quickly diagnosed a few years back with hip arthritis due to hip surgery done as a teenager -- a part of my hip bone was removed to combat infection. I am 49, fit and slender but recently went on an 8 hour long flight. Since sitting that long, I have been plagued for the last few weeks with symptoms of stiffness after exercising, limping somewhat until the stiffness diminishes and some pain (not significant) in the upper thigh/buttocks area. Although my internist found arthritis on the xray, I have not formally seen a doctor regarding this problem. Would you suggest starting with my internist (have minimal relationship with her) or heading to a rheumatologist or orthopedic doctor?
AnswerDear Karen, You need to know exactly what TYPE of arthritis you have, first of all..... You need to have a RF blood test which is the test that is done to see if you have the Rheumatoid factor in your blood.... If this is positive, then 9 chances out of 10 you have Rheumatoid arthritis and if so, you need to see a Rheumatologist.... However, if you have Osteoarthritis, then your best bet is to see an Orthopedic physician....
thank you, karen
