QuestionI am 66 years old and in good health. About a month ago I developed a pain in my right shoulder that makes it painful for me to move my right arm in certain directions. Sometimes my right arm above the elbow aches. It is also painful for me to sleep on my right side. I thought the pain would just go away over time but it has not. There is no joint pain in any other part of my body. I am not a "doctor person" and I would like to know if this could be the beginnings of arthritis and if there are exercises I could do and/or if there is something I could take to lessen the discomfort.
Thank you,
Arnold
AnswerArnold,
The first thing you need to do is see your doctor. There are several things this can be. Any treatment program has to be based on an accurate diagnosis.
It could be arthritis in your shoulder or a bone spur. It could also be a torn rotor cuff, Tendonitis or other soft tissue damage. It could also be a herniated disc in your neck. This creates shoulder pain that radiates down the arm.
Each of these has a different treatment protocol. So it is important to find the cause of the pain before you try to treat it.
