Does taking Prilosec cause bone loss?

Question
I have arthritis in my knees.  In December 2007 I got a cortisone injection in each knee.  Right knee developed a staph infection which was treated with I.V. antiobiotics and arthroscopic surgery.  I still have tremendous pain in the knee and for 8 months have been taking four (4) 200 mg. Advil, one 500 mg. aspirin and 1/2 Percoset (325/apap) DAILY.  Doctor told me to take PRILOSEC to coat my stomach and prevent stomach ulcers.  I just read that extended usage of PRILOSEC can increase your chance of hip fractures because of bone loss (I am 62 years).  What other product is on the market which can prevent stomach ulcers, but is safe?  Can you help?

Julie

Answer
Julie,

Prilosec does not cause bone loss. It can however effect your bodies ability to absorbe calcium. Unfortunately all acid reducers fall in the same category.

Understand that the combination of drugs you are taking can cause serious problems with you digestive system. Problems that can lead to death.

Adding a good calcium supplement to your diet can help. These drugs do not prevent you body from being able to absorbe calcium they just reduce the percentage of the available calcium that your body absorbs. Having more calcium available can make up the difference.
