gout vs hypothyroidism

Question
I am 50 with a history of HTN, Obesity, joint pain, recurrent patella sublexation, hypothyroid, one episode of joint pain of uncertain origin and am on Tenormin, Tursomide, Etodolac, Synthroid and Adapex. I have recently lost 20 lbs over 4 months and 14 inches by exercise. The last episode of joint pain I thought my knee cap had locked up again but it hadn't. The doctor drained the joint and the drainage was a very odd green color not purulent almost neon. The tests and cultures were inconclusive and and I & D was done on the knee. After all this there was no infection and it was believed I had gout but they did not have the lab to prove it. This time they have also recently found problems with the thyroid.
Any connection and are there any questions I should be asking my doctors

Answer
Jeanie,

I do not understand how they can have drained your knee and not tested for uric acid (gout).

Your knee problem does not sound like it is a result of either condition. While gout can start in a knee it is very rare that it does. It almost always shows up in the hands or feet first.

Hypothyrodism can cause joint pain but it is rare for their to be a build up of fluid in the joint because of the condition.

Most likely the problem with the knee has another origin. Fluid on the knee can happen after trauma to the knee, bursitis, arthritis, over use and a host of other reasons.

It is a good idea to keep a close watch on the knee for symptoms and see the doctor right away if symptoms appear. Most likely they will not.
