Antinuclear Antibodies

Question
I have been told that my blood tests show that I have antinuclear antibodies with a titer of 1:400 and a speckled pattern. I was also told it was insignificant but I have read that it means I could have an autoimmune disease. I am a 44 year old female. I also suffer from a lot of allergies. I have decided to make an appointment with my immunologist. Can you advise whether these results are important and should be followed up? Many thanks.

Answer
They're only significant to your doctor. S/he uses them to support a diagnosis already suspected based on symptoms, history, and how you appear at your appointment.  You are the age group and sex most affected by autoimmune diseases, and if you're suffering symptoms, you should be assessed.
