QuestionIs there an age when your knees and feet give out and you can no longer run, for fear of damaging your knees or getting arthritis?
I am 53. Just recently I have been getting sore knees, and less so, sore feet. I have the best shoes I can find, and good form, but now I have to get my stress relief biking. I miss running.
I have tried glucosamine, taking Aleve daily, all that stuff.
My right knee is finally pain free after weeks off.
I am worried that if I hit the road again I may make things worse.
About ten years ago I had my ankle scoped, and there is arthritis in my family.
I am a professional driver and lately my knees have been siezeing up after sitting for a while-this never used to happen.
I also got a scare today when they gave out and I almost fell dopwn the stairs.
Should I hang up the runners? Is there anything I can take or exercises to strengthen them?
AnswerBud, please see a doctor about these complaints soon! If you can find one exercise-oriented, even better. (Here in the US one would go to a sports medicine doctor.) It would be a shame if you had to completely give up on running - maybe a gentle program that switches out between running and biking. But you need fully assessed before doing anything. The knees giving out is pretty scary and could lead to further injury, so see someone soon.
