QuestionHi Amelia,
Do you know if Scleroderma causes fingers to become crooked? I have puffy fingers and mild thickening/hardening around my nails and fingertips, but now some of my fingers are starting to become a little crooked/curved towards one another.
Thanks
AnswerDefinitely, Kathy. Early on I experienced what seemed like "contracture" from swelling so if you're "puffy," it could be temporary. Actual contractures are caused by tightening of the tendons and the skin and they are permanent. An occupational therapist can help you with hand exercises that can help you retain as much flexibility as possible. Some people have severe contractures and other have mild ones, but many people function well despite them. There are lots of aids to help with day-to-day activities that may be affected by contractures and with some things we kind of adapt automatically. Talk to your doctor about getting therapy now to retain flexibility.
