Question
I have been taking Fosamax for 5 years but now I read that there is a side effect associated with it called necrosis (death) of the jawbone.  This usually develops after a tooth extraction.  I am especially concerned since I have Sjogren's Syndrome which affects my salivary glands making me prone to dental problems.  Should I discontinue the Fosamax and, if so, is there an alternative treatment that is safe?  Thank you.

Answer
Dear Brenda

I have never heard of that side effect, it just seems that a medication that would promote bone mass growth and prevent necrosis, would not cause it in another body part.

I take fosamax on a weekly basis, and I have an appointment with my doctor on Wednesday.  I'll be happy to ask for you.  Send me your email address if you'd like and when I find out, I'll email you back.

I know there is another medication called Boniva, but I don't know if the pharmacology is the same as fosamax.

It's a good question, and I regret I don't have the answer.

Sharon
