Question
Hello Dr Davis..

my son was diagnosed with fibrous dysplasia after having a pathological fracture 2 weeks ago to his left femur. he in now is a spica from his waist down. the fibrous area is from his left knee upward for 12 cm.

Question 1: what are the chances that this fibrous could be healed with the spica only .. or is he going to need a bone grafting operation?

Question 2: if he is going to need an operation (bone grafting) how long does it take on average for it to get back to normal shape?

Question 3: my son is 7 and 7 months.. and he hasnt lost any of his primary teeth yet? and no other teeth are erupting. could that be a sign that he might have this problem in his jaw or skull?

Question 4: any advice on how to choose the right doctor for this?

Thanks a lot for your help and time I appreciate it alot..

Answer
Dear Rima

I am not a doctor.  Many experts on the boards are not, so much of your question is far out of the range of what I can answer.

But as far as choosing a doctor, go to the largest teaching PEDIATRIC hospital in your area and get in touch with the orthopedic department.  Get referrals from that hospital.  Many surgeons, although they are very good at what they do, do not have expertise in children.  Children's bodies are different and since your son is still growing, and bones are not fully developed, you must see a doctor that specializes in children, or has had a good track record with them.

Best of luck to you and I am truly sorry I could not help you more.

Sharon Davis
