QuestionI'm relatively certain that I cracked a rib showing off at the pool 30 years ago. It hurt badly at the time of the injury and for several years after. Whenever I coughed or sneezed I would have a sharp pain in the same location. I could inhale slowly and deeply and it seemed to "pop" back into place. I recently had bronchitis and in one coughing session, the same pain came back in the same place. Is it possible that I re-cracked the rib? Should I seek medical attention?
AnswerMelanie,
Coughing can occasionally caused fractured ribs but it is uncommon. More likely a rib could sublux (move out of place just a little). There is no way to know if your rib is/was fractured without an x-ray. I would suggest that you see a medical professional and get your problem properly diagnosed.
