Question
Hi Sharon

I recently went through the rebuilding of my hip after a car accident. It's been two and a half months, and I am still advised by my doctor as non-weight bearing on my operated leg. The problem is that though my hip and upper leg aren't in much pain, my foot is in a lot of pain. It feels as though the nerves are damaged. I question why I have so much pain from the ankle down when it was my hip that was damaged.

Thank you in advance.

Answer
Hi Kevin

I am not surprised that you are still non weight bearing.   You should go to partial weight bearing when the doctor feels your legs are ready to so do.  This may take some time as they do not want you chance that you do anything to the bones.  The foot may be feeling residual pain from healing.  The best thing to do is to ask your doctor to take some tests to see if there is nerve damage. There may be some slight damage due to all the surgery you had.

In general I was told nerve damage that does not heal after 14 months of time, may not completely heal.  This may not be your case, but due to extreme surgery I had I was told that 14 month period was my waiting time.

Best thing to do would be ask your doctor what he feels the problem is and if you can rerferred to a neurologist to just ease your mind.
