QuestionI coach an athlete who is experiencing sudden sharp pain in her middle quad when running at full speed. Once she stops the pain disappears. All strength testing shows no reduction in strength in the affected leg. She was recently treated for dehydration. Is this an after affect, a slight strain or possibly a circulation issue?
AnswerHi Nick
If you read my bio you will see that I am not an expert in the area of muscle injuries. My gut reaction though, with the little I know is that it is probably a build up of lactic acid in the muscle. If the pain, as you say is located in the muscle and not a joint, the bones are probably not being compromised.
I'd be sure your athelete drinks plenty of water before and while exercising, and if the problem persists, she should see her doctor.
You might also want to get feedback from another expert on this issue.
Hope this helps.
