hip replacement surgery gone wrong

Question
My wife (age 79)had a hip replacement surgery on Fen 20 2006. The
pain is long gone but the muscles around that area are still weak and
she limps dramatically. All suffering and physical therapy for nothing.
Her surgeon insists that the angles are perfect even though her leg now
is rotated to the outside and higher than the other courtesy of the
surgery. What can we do? It's really frustating. A hip revision surgery
would help?  We have been to a neurologist and he sys there is no nerve
damage. How comes her leg is still weak after so many months?
Thank

Answer
Hi Roberto

I am truly sorry for what you and your wife are going through and I can honestly see your frustration from your letter to me.

Is it possible that your wife has one leg that is shorter than the other?  If that's the case, a lift can be put into her shoe or they can build up the shoe to even out her gait.

The other thing you might want to do is get another opinion from another surgeon as to what is going on with your wife.

As we age, it takes longer to heal but it's been over a year and I would assume that your wife should be doing better at this time.

Try the above suggestions and hopefully some of them will help.

I truly wish you and your wife the best in her continued recovery.
