Question
I had my hip surgery 3 1/2 weeks ago and am basically on my own for p.t.  My surgeon told me that walking is the best therapy.  I do perform the exercises the therapist gave me to do - but he was only here 4 times.  I've been walking twice a day outside for about 10 minutes each time.  My hip/leg does bother me afterwards and I have to rest.  I saw someone  mentioned glucosomine chondroitin to be taken post-surgery.  I was taking it prior - should I continue, does it help?  I'm using a cane now, but is there anything else I should be doing as I'm very impatient.  Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Mary

Answer
Hi Mary

You are doing fine.  Please remember that you had major surgery and it takes time to heal.  Personally I don't see any reason why you can't take the glucosamine but please ask your doctor first to ensure that any medications you are taking now won't react with the glucosamine.  It does help in keeping muscles and joints lubricated for ease of movement.

If you swim, ask your doctor if you can continue to do that exercise.  Swimming is wonderful for recovery as it does not put pressure on the hips.  I would, however, stay away from water aerobics since it can put pressure on the knees if you do jumping in the pool.  Water walking is great too.

Keep doing the exercises the therapist gave you and be careful to follow all the precautions.  You will eventually give up the cane too, and walk without any assistance or pain.  It does take about 3 months to start to be on the road to healing completely.  Just don't overdo things.
