QuestionQUESTION: I had a THR almost 3 years ago, excellent recovery, resumed most normal activites. Starting this summer I am getting a pain in the back of the thigh on the side with the new hip, just under the buttocks. It seems to come when I have been more active (walking, perhaps a bit more lifting than usual), or slept on that side. At night it is painful enough it wakes me up and makes it hard to drop back off to sleep. Any ideas? Thanks!

QUESTION: Thank you for the response.
I went all through your answers on the website and had not found anything I felt had addressed my pain, hence my questions. In reviewing them I still dont see anything. Could you please give me a date or other reference to find the answer you are referring to?
Part of my problem seems to be a lack of post-op PT. I'm not sure I was every told all the permanent DO-NOTS. I found this website in searching the web for permanent limitations following a THR. Lots of stuff on post-op but no realitvely easy to find here-is-how-to-live-with it now sources. Perhaps you could add one? Might save a lot of questions:). Thanks!
AnswerDear Catherine
I'm sorry for the confusion so I'll do my best to re-answer.
This sounds to me as if it's muscle or tendon related, but to be sure, I think you should get in touch with your doctor and get an X ray of the hip to ensure the prosthesis is in place and nothing is getting loose. Three years is a very short time for a hip prosthesis to fail if all went well from the beginning and that is what leads me to think it's muscle related.
Have you done anything different in your exercises? Have you added activities that are not approved by your doctor? Are you walking longer and up hills? Look for something that you are doing which is a change in your routine, and that might hold the answer. But in the end, a check up by your doctor would be the best thing for you to do.
Hope this helps.
