QuestionLast week I broke my elbow. Is it normal to be so fatigued following a break? I am only taking OTC for pain because I don't like side effects of Rx. I am 42 years old with osteopenia brought on by POF. I feel weak and exhausted. Normal or not?
AnswerHello Susan
Although my expertise is not in the area of the elbow joint, I do have experience in recuperating post trauma.
I doubt that your osteopenia is contributing to your fatigue. As you know, osteopenia is a precursor to osteoporosis which is a weakening of bones. This condition should not be causing you fatigue.
If you are taking over the maximum dosage of over the counter pain meds, that could be the reason you are tired. Medication, even over the counter meds, have side effects. This may sound silly, but if you are not taking the correct pain meds, if you are in a lot of pain, the side effects of your body fighting off the pain could be contributing to your fatigue. Do you see what I am getting at. It takes energy to heal, and if you are not letting your body relax and heal by taking the proper pain meds that may have been prescribed by your doctor, your body may be using a major amount of energy to try and cope with the pain.
Are you eating well? Are you taking a multivitamin? Are you in physical therapy? PT can cause fatigue also.
So, in essence, yes your fatigue can be caused by the extra energy your body needs to help itself heal. But if you are concerned, which apparently you are, you should mention this to your doctor.
