Depression after total hip replacement

Question
Dear Sharon,
It has been 17 days since my surgery.  I am home and everything medically is going well after a relatively noneventful and successful surgery.  I am 58 years old and find myself very depressed especially in the afternoon.  I have friends who call me and come to visit....one per day.  I read this is relatively common, but I am set back by it.  Don't know if I should let my doctor know or how long I can expect this to last.

Answer
Hi Becky

At this point you are mourning the loss of your independence. As your life returns to normal, your depression will get less and less.

The best thing you can do for now, is to see if your doctor will prescribe a short term anti depressant that you will be able to wean off of fairly easily as you get back to your normal activities.

It's not something you will need for the rest of your life.   Talk to your doctor about it.  You might also consider short term counseling as well.

But, truly, the feelings you have are absolutely normal.

Sharon
