Pregnancy with a 3 part hip replacement

Question
Dear sharon, 3 years ago i was diagnosed with a giant cell tumor in my right femur. I had that removed followed by a hip replacement. My surgeon said that it is okay for me to have children but i am worried about the birth, Do you think it would be safer to have a caesarean? as i delivered my last child 4 years ago naturally and my labor was 16 hours long and i remember staining my hips in labor. Thank you. Dolina

Answer
First of all congratulations on your pregnancy.  Please be careful to keep your weight gain reasonable to avoid extra strain on your hips.

I had my two children different ways.  My first son was natural and my second was cesarian.  If I had to do it again, I'd go for the cesarian as it was much less strain on the hips.  But talk to your doctor.

It was just an easier operation for me to give birth by dislocation-section rather than worry about moving my hips in natural childbirth and risking a dislocation.

Best of luck to you,
Sharon
