QuestionI am running the LA Marathon Mar 2. I was supposed to run 22 miles last weekend as my last long run and my knee started hurting at mile 16. I think its ITB, and I wanted to know what I can do to insure that I finish my training and get to the start healthy.
AnswerSarah,
Iliotibial band syndrome (ITB) is one of the more common running injuries. It is an inflammation of the band as it rubs over the lateral femoral condyle, sometimes a snapping sensation may be present with flexion and extension. The most common causes are over training, running on a banked surfaces or in runners who allow their legs to cross over the midline during the running stride.
The best treatments will be proper running form (easier said than done!) and avoiding banked surfaces.
Plie' and the leg-crossover exercise, which increase the flexibility of the ITB. Also relative rest, NSAIDS and cross training and post exercise icing may help.
