Question
Hi and thank you for taking the time to answer this question

Is it possible for the bicep femoris muscle to partially tear away from the bone and create a roll (reminds me of a 2.5" x 5" long hotdog)on the back of thigh just above the knee which can bee seen and felt?
I felt it tear while walking nearly 1 year ago (that was a 50 on a scale of 1 to 10).  At the time, I could put no real weight on the leg (walking only on tiptoe with a borrowed cane) and did the ice, rest, thing.  I never went to the Dr because it was simply too expensive and figured they would prescribe the same treatment.  Over the course of a few months, while never really healing, it did improve, the "hotdog" never went away.
Recently, I was stuck in hour long bumper to bumper traffic which seems to have exacerbated the problem.  There is significant pain when pressing down (on the gas pedal) or changing over to the brake while driving.  I've discovered that if i apply pressure to it, that helps abit.  Bending the joint (stairs/getting into the car) is also challenging.  The muscles in the calf have begun to spasm when I use the muscle. Can that be just sympathy pains? My ankle remains swollen 24/7.
Since i waited so long, is it too late to treat?  will ice, aspirin, rest do any good?  Are there exercises which help?  I would love to avoid visiting a doctor if at all possible as my insurance is a joke and even a simple office visit is expensive (I could budget a visit in, but if they want to order an x-ray or mri - that gets costly really quickly)

thank you again for your help.

Sincerely,

Andey

Answer
Dear Andey,

This Orthopedic Chicago Podiatrist located in West Loop 60661, Roscoe Village 60618, Ukrainian Village 60622, Elmhurst 60126 & Bartlett 60103 says,

It is possible to suffer a partial tear of a muscle. These tears usually can be repaired. Try to find an orthopedic clinic & let them know your situation. MRI fees can be negotiated-or you can ask for the prescription & go out & try to find the least expensive MRI. There is a clinic in Oklahoma that will do this surgery for much less than any hospital or clinic. Perhaps visit them http://surgerycenterok.com/
