Joe A Shaw PA-C - 6/13/2008
QuestionDear Dr. Shaw. About 3 weeks ago (25 May 2008) I was involved in a car accident and fractured my right humerus about 6cm above my elbow. My orthopedic surgeon suggested surgery to repair the bone, by inserting a plate into my arm. He explained the risks involved with regards to nerve damage etc.
However, after the operation he said that he was happy with the outcome of the operation. My arm has been in a sling ever since. It is now 3 weeks post-operation, and i have extremely limited to no range of movement in my elbow, but I am able to move my fingers and wrist freely without any pain. Is this normal? I know it is a good sign that I'm able to move my fingers and wrist, as it shows that there's probably no nerve damage. I am worried about the movement (or lack thereof...) in my elbow? Do all/most patiens suffer from this?
Thanks in advance for your time and help with regards to this matter.

AnswerDewald,
Yes, assumming no infections, complications etc..you have a ways to go..I think you are looking at 6-9 mos or so for "maximum" improvement. The most common thing you need to look out for is muscle contractions where the bicep muscles draw up at become tight and stiff..so as tolerated and per your surgeon and Physical therapists directions you will need to gradually get range of motion going. It will come but it is a slow road.
