QuestionDear Sharon:
My daughter is pregnant and has Legg-Perthes disease. She was released last year from her pediatric orthopedist and told some day find an orthopedic surgeon to replace the hip if necessary. I am concerned about the hip changes that occur during pregancy. I'm sure her doctor will research it and I have found some indication that C-section is possibly safer to avoid dislocation. Any other thoughts or direction on where to get advice (especially on third-trimester)? I read your comment about miminal weight gain, which is a great start! Thank you very much. Mary C.
AnswerHi Mary
I would give your daughter the same advice as a hip replacement patient. Be careful with weight gain. Try to gain the least amount of weight as possible BUT do not compromise the health of the baby. I gained about 45 pounds with each pregnancy.
Try to get a C-Section, since her muscles may not be toned enough for the delivery in a normal fashion.
Be careful walking and bending. As you know from your pregnancies, the center of gravity is changed during pregnancy and we tend to fall sometimes.
Have your daugther look into a high risk pregnancy group. I went with a high risk OB/GYN during my pregnancy because they were willing to work with my orthopedist while I was pregnant in case any issues arose.
Other than that, tell your daughter I wish her much luck in the pregnancy! Mazel Tov!
