Question This past June I was involved in a motorcycle accident in which my humerus was broken off near the top.I under went surgery now with a titanium plate and eleven screws my shoulder seems to be as good as its going to get.I've started pt these past few weeks and my range and strength have suffered greatly. What if any good advise could you give me to help me regain range and strength in my shoulder? What do you think would be a realistic outcome for this type of injury with my age only 38?
AnswerHi Lance and thanks for the question. The shoulder and is funny joint and what I mean by that is it takes alot of work to get it back up to par. The fact that you are 38 will help in getting it back close to what it was but, there may always be some slight motion and strength deficits.
The fact that you are being seen by a physical therapist should place you in good hands for the time being however rehab for you may go on for some time. You will be given exercises Iam sure to continue after the PT is over with and you should get further motion and strength.
There is alot involved in shoulder rehab as its the most mobile joint in the human body and can lead to multiple problems.
Its tied in to the rotator cuff and the therapist has to be careful not to strain or injure that area as well.
Do not give up hope yet. Believe me its to early to fully determine just how much motion and strength you will get back. Continue to follow your PTs instructions right now.
When you finish let me know how things are going and I can at that time possibly refer some good exercises to regain more strength.
