Recurring 5th metatarsal fracture

Question
Dr Tsatsos,

Thank you so much for your time.  2 years ago I broke my left 5th metatarsal in 2 places.  I was in a hurry and running in boots.  I was in a cast for 4 weeks and a boot for 2 more weeks.  Then, almost exactly a year later, I broke the 5th metarsal in my right foot.  I was only in a boot for 6 weeks this time.  My family is wanting to start jogging together but I am afraid that I will break a 5th metatarsal again.  Should I start jogging and if i do, what should I do to help prevent breaking these bones again.  Thank you again for your time.

Dear Tanya,

For your recurring 5th metatarsal fractures. Go see a good sports podiatrist-like the docs at AnkleNFootCenters for a gait and shoe gear evaluation & the biomechanical reason for your 5th metatarsal fractures. Sometimes custom orthotics http://anklenfoot.com/Orthotics/tabid/176/Default.aspx & or shoe modifications may help. http://chicagopodiatrist.wordpress.com/2014/05/08/making-strikes/
Hope this helps & Good Luck!
