Lateral release knee - 5 weeks post op

Question
I had my lateral release 5 weeks ago. And I am concerned about two things:
1. Is it normal that I can't get up (from a chair) with my weight balanced on
both legs? When I do try the patella hurts a lot. Same thing goes for going up
the stairs, when I put my full weight on the leg... Getting up hurts more now
than it did before the surgery...

2. I saw my surgeon yesterday and I asked him if it's normal that my knee is
still swollen and he said yes. How long does it take for the knee to get its
normal volume back???

In order to strengthen my muscles, my pt advised me to balance my weight
on one leg and bend as much as I can, but this really hurts. Is it maybe too
soon to this is exercise?

I would really appreciate if you could share your thoughts.

Kind regards

Answer
Nadia,    To answer your first question it not unusual for their to still be some pain and discomfort after 5 weeks out. You may have to give it 6-8 weeks before you see some relief.

2.   The knee will respond generally in 5-7 weeks out after surgery. This again is general. This will also depend on your bodyweight and how much you are up on your leg etc....

If the exercise that our PT gave you is painful then back down a little with the exercise for now. Try sitting in a chair will 2-3 lbs on your leg and straighten your operated leg out and hold it for a count of five then lower the leg slowly. Try this 2x a day for 10-15 reps.

Try straight leg raises if you are not doing them yet. Lie flat on your bed bend your good leg with the heel on the bed, straighten your operated leg and lift it to the level of your good knee only, hold for a count of five then lower slowly as it gets close to the bed sheet lift it again and hold again. Try this 10-15 times as well.

Then after a week or so try the exercise you were given by the PT again and see if there is a difference.

Now, If you have been doing these then just give it more time. You will find in due time that you will be able to complete the exercise.

Good Luck
