Question
hi Sharon,  i am 20 years old.  3 months ago i had a revision total hip replacement on my left hip.  I had a slipped upper femoral epiphysis and i had emergency surgery to correct this.  2 months after the corrective surgery i was told that the surgeon had caught the blood supply to my hip which led to the joint dying off.  when i was 16 i was told that there was no other option but to have a total hip replacement.  I had the op and was back to my normal routine within 6 months.  I started to have pain in the joint last year and was diagnosed with a loose ball and socket.  I had the revision op and have noticed that i am still having severe pain up and down my whole leg and in the joint.  It feels as though it could be a trapped nerve because sometimes i am unable to move my leg when i am lying down.  i was wondering if you had some advice for me at all?  thankyou, Jak

Answer
I had nerve problems in a leg after surgery, and my problem was a feeling of tingling and numbness.  If you are getting pain in your back too, it may be sciatica, but it sounds to me as if this pain is more physiological in nature.  Only your orthopedist or a neurologist can tell you if it is indeed nerve related.

To start off easy, have your doctor measure the length of your legs.  If there is a difference in length, you can experience all kinds of leg pain due to a gait that is not normal for your body.  Seeing that you had a lot of surgery in a relatively short period of time, uneven legs can be the culprit.

You may also have some muscle apathy again, PT can help that.  Because you are unable to move your leg while lying down, it certainly can be muscle apathy or as you say nerve damage, but this cannot be diagnosed on the internt, you have you make an appointment with your doctor and/or a neurologist to be certain,

Best of luck to you.
