QuestionMy mother just had a "socket" replaced in her right hip six days ago after a fall at home. Unfortunately, she is also suffering with a broken right elbow. She is hospitalized and seems to be responsive to PT thus far this week. I know she has weeks of PT to go thru, etc. and we will probably have to bring Christmas to her this year (!), but can you give me an approximate time for this type of healing? She is 77 years old, type 2 diabetic and has had right knee replaced (about 10 years ago). Very well in mind and spirit - any response??
AnswerHi Jackie
I feel confident that your mom will do fine in recovery, barring any additional physical complications. The fact that she is responsive to PT is a very good sign. Additionally having a good spirit and quick mind at her age will also benefit her healing.
She may get a little depressed that you have to bring Christmas to her because she'll be out of her element, but if she is doing well, you might want to see if you can bring her home with you on Christmas Day or Christmas Eve. This way she will feel as if she can be a part of the celebration wherever your family has it. Of course she'll have to go back but at least she will feel good being with your family. Part of recovery from any illness is that the patient feels as if their life is getting back on track.
Don't mention to her that you will be asking so in case the answer is no, she won't be let down, but it doesn't hurt to ask if she can at least join the family for Christmas dinner.
Have a wonderful holiday season and I send my warmest wishes to you and your family.
