Question
Hematoma
I am a 41 yr old active male. Exactly 8 days ago from today (3/10/09), I had a sledding accident where I collided with a large fallen tree limb. The impact was directly to my lower buttocks, upper thigh area, on my right side. The bruise produced has extended from my lower buttocks to the back of my knee and slightly wraps around to my inner thigh.
At the impact area, I notice and feel a firm mass or "hematoma"? which is very tender. There seems to be slight swelling, but there is pain in the affected area and down the same muscle to the back of my knee.
I cannot sleep on my right side due to the discomfort of the affected area. The bruising is starting to dissipate, turning from purple to a yellowish color.
When should the "hematoma" normally be absorbed by the body? Aside from any other symptoms, when should I see a specialist? Thanks for your answer in advance.
AnswerHi Tony,
The hematoma will more then likely take 2-3 weeks to clear maybe longer depending on its size etc...
If you do not have any other symptoms in the leg or anywhere else in the body then you may not need top see a specialist on this injury.
However IF you have continuing pain or other discomfort then seek further advice.
If you were going to see someone the best time of course would have been immediately after the injury.
Just monitor it carefully.
