Question
humerus fracture
Hi, I fractured my humerus 14 days ago in a snowboarding accident. I have been advised that it is best not to pin the bone because of the risks attached to surgery. I hope the image attaches, but if not, the arm is set at a right angle in a plaster cast, the bone is at an angle if 15 - 20 degrees and the fracture is clean through the bone and the bone is splintered. I am 39 years old, and would very much appreciate a second opinion. I can't get one because my consultant refuses to refer me.
Thans,
Nicky
AnswerNicky,
I deal more with rehabilitation issues and not these type of surgical issues. I can tell you from a rehab standpoint it looks like a clean break and should heal fine providing you get the necessary rehabilitation once the doctor clears you for it.
Regarding you age it should heal fine and really not cause you to alter your lifestyle in any way.
If there became a problem with the healing process then I would assume
the surgeon will have to go back in and operate and put a plate in there IF needed.
When you go for your follow-up the doctor will take x-rays and see how the bone is healing then proceed from that point.
Again I am not a doctor so if this answer does not quite satisfy you I would resubmit to one of the other experts on the panel that is a orthopedic surgeon for more detail.

Nicky, I submitted this myself back to the question pool for others to look at and respond.
