Questionmy knee buckled i understand there is going to be pain with it but what are the proper ways to care for it to make sure no permenant damage occurs? i.e. what braces needed, ice it or keep it warm, work it or take it easy, thanx
AnswerRobert,
When you say the knee hyperextended, did it straighten out completely or do you mean when you say the knee buckled that the knee flexed causing a fall or near fall?
If you have some questions regarding the severity of the knee or if it continues to cause you discomfort, by all means have it checked out by an orthopedic doctor.
This will give you some peace of mind if nothing else.
I would not brace it yet before I see a doctor. You may cause more harm then good or spend money for nothing.
Ice is good if the injury was 24 hours or less. You can use heat after that if it helps. If the knee continues to swell get the heat off and see a doctor.
If the knee buckled then it can be several causes involved, could be a problem coming from the inside of the knee that will not cure itself until someone examines it.
You can try some straight leg raises and seated leg extensions to strengthen the quads if that is what is needed.
The knee hyperextending is different then the knee buckling however.
Have it checked out though.
