Question
I am wondering about possible treatment options for internal femoral torsion/external tibial torsion for young adults. I have been experiencing significant (~5/10), constant pain in both knees for the last 2 1/2 months and the only cause my GP can find is the alignment of my legs (CRP, ANA, RF, xrays all normal, ruled out osgood schlatters and patellofemoral syndrome). I have a slight in-toeing gait, but currently have the habit of swinging each leg out to the side when I walk so my knees won't hit or catch on each other. I already use orthotics for previous ankle problems and nothing I have tried (NSAIDs, exercises, RICE, heat, activity) has helped to reduce the pain. It will be a few more months before I have the option of seeing a specialist about this and in the meanwhile the pain is worsening. Any suggestions for home treatments while I wait for the referral to go through? What kind of definitive treatment options might I soon need to be considering?
Thank you,
Leanne

Answer
Dear Leanne,

If you are over weight you need to lose weight ASAP!
Wear your orthotics or get new ones. See a Board Certified Podiatrist in Orthopedics for new orthotics/orthoses.
An Orthopedist who specializes in lower extremities(legs, ankle and feet) would be able to do any surgical treatment that may be recomended.
In the meantime you can also wear knee braces.Go to AnkleNFootCenters.com online web-store for examples.
Call to speed up the referral-Tell them that you are in pain!-That may speed up the referral.
Hope this info helps you.
Good Luck!
