QuestionI realize you dont specialize in shoulders but my question is more geared toward how to choose the right Dr. I had a shoulder mri a year ago. MRI report and the shoulder surgeon both reported fraying of rotator cuff. After 2 rounds of therapy, shoulder has not healed. I moved to New York, and have seen a new Dr at the Columbia Orthopaedic clinic. I took him my mri images from the cd the mri facility had given me, and this Dr says rotator cuff looks ok based on the mri images. He is a young Dr. About 35 years old. His shoulder and sports medicine fellowship was completed in 08-09. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt and just assume that some Dr's are just not good at interpreting mri images like the radiologist Dr's are and that he still is a good Dr to perform rotator cuff surgery on me or if I should go to a different Dr. The shoulder pain is definitely rotator cuff injury and fraying as a recent, 2nd mri reported just like the 1st mri. Just dont know how confident I should be in him....
AnswerANSWER: This Chicago, South Loop & Elmhurst Orthopedic Podiatrist of AnklenfootCenters.com says.......
Dear James,
Go with the opinion of the recently trained shoulder specialist. A Fellowship is no small deal.
You can always have the surgery--and the best surgeon will visualize the problem at the time of surgery and make appropriate adjustments no matter what the MRI says.
MRIs are not infallible & the radiologist who reads them does not have the patient in front of them to confirm suspicions.
That's why I always re-read all MRIs with the patient present-so I can correlate all findings.
Hope This Helps
Good Luck !!!
