Question
Extra Bone
Extra Bone
Dr. Tsatsos,

I realize this is a question about fingers, as opposed to toes, but I hope you are able to enlighten me.  I suffered a break in the last joint of my middle finger playing softball about eight years ago, and after it being dismissed by everyone as a simple jam, let it heal without treatment.  I finally received X-rays last week to discover that extra bone had grown on the top side of the joint, leaving my finger permanently bent.

The doctor suggested I just live with it, as surgery can be risky (which I agree with), but are there any other current or future options for treatment?  I'm curious as to whether a re-break would cause the unnatural bone to be dissolved in the healing process.

Thank you for your time and any advice you are able to give!  I appreciate your involvement with AllExperts.

Justin

Dear  Justin,

Another break would not remove the bone spur. At this point in time-choices are live with it or repair surgically. May be worth seeing a hand specialist for a second opinion for a surgical technique.
